Teaching style

Drama theory doesn’t have to be a challenge or a chore! It is too easy for drama teachers to focus on practical work rather than theory; to allow students the opportunity to experience drama whilst shelving the study of drama for another day. In an educational setting drama needs to marry both theory and practice. Students need to engage with vocabulary, elements, conventions of form and style, including drama history, along with theoretical skills – literacy, conceptualising, script writing, critiquing. We are cheating our student, especially those in middle years, if we only focus on practical aspects of drama and kinaesthetic learning; in our attempt to keep Drama “fun”, we lose the legitimacy and integrity of Drama as an academic subject. Let DVP help you in building a solid foundation of dramatic knowledge and understanding through both drama theory and drama practice.
