Fairly Elementary

Upper Elementary is all about factors, factors, factors -- and sometimes we don't even realize it! Students can practice their knowledge of factors by playing Factor Wars. This game is played just like the traditional game war, except that there are separate cards for factors and products. Students will reinforce their math skills up to multiplication facts of 12 (and 13, if you include all the cards).

Looking for a way to integrate writing into your curriculum? This project-based assessment for math has students create their own polygon world. Students are responsible for a visual that draws on their knowledge of polygons as well as small written pieces explaining plot, character, characters, and setting of their made up world. Designed and executed as a cooperative project, students could also complete the task individually.

Fraction Fishing has your students testing the waters in the knowledge of fractions and equivalencies. By combining elements of Go-Fish and Rummy, students have the change to practice a variety of fraction skills. Game comes with picture fraction cards that need to be added together to match written fractions in either mixed number or improper fraction form. Depending on level of instruction, some fractions may be pulled from the deck to make it easier for learners.

Teaching strategies is good, but kids need a visual reference to remember to use them while reading or completing math problems. This file contains 1 test-taking mantra, 5 math strategies, and 4 reading strategies posters. Each poster is highly visual and uses easy to remember phrases to help students remember the steps to successful test-taking.

You can mix and match the cards to make different sets -- you can use the same cards for weeks if you switch out the kinds of cards (they've been color coded to sort them more easily) Or, use the cards to improve automaticity in math warm ups! Great work for independent practice or with a buddy at a math station!

This game is a sorting activity for addition and subtraction. Cards are sets within 5 and 10. A great way to check and see how quickly and accurately students can identify real math facts. Cards are matched to a letter (A-L) so that the student can check their own answers on the answer keys.

Need extra practice with adding 10 more or 10 less? These cards, color coded to allow for multiple children working at a center at a time or for students to revisit the center multiple time, allow them to practice BOTH 10 more/less and 1 more/less. The file also includes a basic recording sheet, although I often have students directly write on cards with wet erase markers.

If you're anything like me, holding onto those 12 sided dice can be an issue! Instead, use these spinners that have 12 partitions to supplement your math games. As a bonus, I've included spinners for 10 more/less 1 more/less to reinforce skills we use in first grade, although it could be used in many different grade levels.
