Use Chemistry to Solve a Crime! This Chemistry Module can be used as a whole unit using the concepts of separating mixtures (chromatography), solutions (acids/bases), density, and chemical and physical properties (testing powders) to solve a crime. At the end of the unit, students use scientific evidence from each lab in addition to interviews from the suspects and additional evidence found by the North Pole Police Dept. to logically determine who is guilty of stealing cookies from Mrs. Claus.

Develop spelling and science skills by providing images of the water cycle, weather, geologic events, and geographic elements. Students will need to identify the image and spell the events and concepts in each image.

Before students work on an actual microscope, have them practice their observational and measurement drawings with this microscope lab activity. Students will be able to make observations, measure specimens, and answer questions about various specimens through the simulated microscope field of view.

Use this series of activities as a parallel task to the Winter Olympics or to add fun to teaching measurement (length, mass, and volume). Students can work in teams or individually to compete in three events: " Snowball Flick" (measuring distance/length with a ruler/measuring tape), " Polar Bear Swim" (measuring volume of a solid using the displacement method), and "Ice Ball Grab" (measuring mass using a pan or triple beam balance). This science activity is designed to support teaching the concepts of mixtures, physical properties, and solutions through the use of chromatography. It can also be an introduction to molecules as students will observe colors moving at different speeds and at different distances due to the size of their molecules. Students enjoy a challenge so creating a mystery to solve helps keep students engaged and vested in the process.
