This reader is designed for beginning readers.
The text is patterned - "Look at me! I am a ---." Students are encouraged to use reading strategies to figure out the unknown word. [Look at how the word starts; Think about the sound that letter makes; Look at the picture.]
The last page is for students to write their own sentence using the same patterned sentence, and draw a picture. With Halloween around the corner, this is sure to be a hit! Instead of a drawing, you could include a PHOTO of

This reader is designed for beginning readers learning sight words and reading strategies. It is suited to Kindergarten and first graders.
The text uses sight words already introduced, and the new sight word on the cover page. I deliberately did not use patterned text to force the reader to look at the words as he/she is reading. Students are encouraged to do what 'good readers' do when they don't know a word - get the first sound out of your mouth; look at the picture; read the first chunk

Students (or adult helper) record how long it takes them to read the sight words. The goal is for them to improve their time, and to build automatic recall. I have included some CVC words with each list.
I have separated the 50 most frequently used sight words into ten lists of five words. I send these worksheets home for extra reading practice. Also, students are invited to use some of the words in sentences.
Word List:
