This is a brief description of how to play the dreidel game. This game can be used as a math center to teach regrouping, base 10, halves, order of operations, cause & effect, different cultures, and games from around the world. It is a fun introduction to Hanukkah while not involving any of the religious significance. The dreidel game can be easily differentiated to accommodate the highest learners, as well as those struggling with certain math concepts.
This is a combination math and literature lesson derived from the Caldecott Award winning book "Heshel and the Hanukkah Goblins" by Eric Kimmel. It uses a portion of the literature to delve into a higher depth of knowledge math exploration relating to the number of candles used during the duration of Hanukkah. Teachers are able to differentiate this lesson to fit the ability levels of all students in the elementary grades; from those with one to one correspondence, to those constructing algebra
This is a packet, predominately of math lessons, that center around the book "The Magic Dreidels" by Eric Kimmel. It takes the actions of Jacob and Frumah Sara and applies math performance tasks to their use of the magic dreidels. These tasks are easily differentiated to accommodate the highest learners, as well as those students struggling in your classroom. Additionally, there are templates for students to create their own dreidels, directions on how to play the dreidel game, and music & ly
This is a series of math performance tasks related to the book "Mrs. Greenberg's Messy Hanukkah" by Linda Glaser. In these lessons students must use the recipe utilized by Mrs. Greenberg and Rachel and adapt it to incorporate the many variables they encounter. There are worksheets included that contain constructed response questions, differentiation techniques, and even a recipe to make traditional latkes!
This is a Common Core aligned lesson focusing primarily on math standards; 3.OA.8, 3.OA.9, 3.G.1 ELA standards; RL.3.1, RI.3.1, RI.3.4, RI.3.10, W.3.2, W.3.10. It is an elongated hands on task involving a selection of books to read, mathematics to solve, internet resources, rubrics, and reading quizes based on the books included. This includes all black-line masters suitable for printing. All lessons are designed around a minimum of DOK 2-3 cognitive level.
This is a math performance task based on the book, "Eight Wild Nights" by Brian P. Cleary. It takes facets of the story and generates authentic mathematical problems that require students to analyze, comprehend, reflect, and solve using multiple mathematical reasoning and operations. The book itself is written at a 4th grade level, however the math can be differentiated to reflect rigor levels that are capable of a student in grades 2 - 6.
These performance tasks are based on the book 'My Two Holidays: A Hanukkah & Christmas Story' written by Danielle Novack and illustrated by Phyllis Harris. We take the content of the story to generate math performance tasks that can encompass multi-step problems, order of operations, all four operations, elapsed time, calendar, and cultural competency. Any of the problems can be scaled to reflect a higher or lower level of rigor depending on the differentiation structure of your classroom. The

Teaching style
My class is based in collaborative learning, structured on the Kagan style. We use multiple centers, small groups, manipulatives, and a focus on multiple intelligence to gain a higher depth of knowledge for all subject areas. Worksheets are a 4 letter word in our classroom! My students think, explain, respond, and discuss both in person and online to show a deep understanding of the standards, but still tailored to their ability and instructional level.
