Handy Math

In this activity, kids illustrate storybook scenarios involving addition & subtraction within 20.  The story contains situations of adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, & comparing!  The unknown is also placed in all positions throughout the book, & students need to solve the embedded problems to continue on with the plot.  Based on a night of trick-or-treating, this blended math & reading activity is perfect for October or early November!

In this activity, students help at an animal shelter by determining how to equally split donations among the kennels.  To do this, they must partition the donated goods into arrays & complete the corresponding number sentences. Once all items have been divvied up, students bring the vision to life by creating a kennel blueprint!
