About the store
I have taught K-8 visual arts for 3 years at a charter school in the Portland, OR area. During those 3 years I also taught English Language Arts, drama, and cooking to students in grades 6-8. I have been an artist in residence at a Spanish Immersion school and have shown my own artwork in a gallery in Oregon City, OR. Currently, I teach 6th grade language arts and social studies at a private school in Bend, OR. I am passionate about the arts, literacy, and history. This project takes students through contour line drawing basics, leading into 3-dimensional contour line in the form of a wire sculpture. Students take it up a notch by adorning their sculpture with tissue paper applied with thinned-out glue. Put battery-operated tea lights inside the finished sculptures for a luminescent glow! The region of Oaxaca, Mexico is rich in arts and culture. The colorful, whimsical painted wood sculptures produced by Oaxacan artisans (known as alebrijes) are the inspiration for this paper mache sculpture. Students will get to know the region and the wood animal sculptures produced in Oaxaca, and complete the unit by creating an alebrije of their own. The elements and principles of pattern, rhythm/repetition, shape, form, and color are the focus throughout the project.

This is a great lesson to tie into a Greek mythology unit in language arts or visual arts. Students will study ancient Greek vases and understand how Greek artists sought to illustrate myths. Students will also recognize the role that positive and negative space play in this ancient artwork. As a final project, students will create an illustration on a scratchboard depicting their choice of a mythological scene, or a theme similar to those found on ancient Greek vases.
