11 years teaching 3rd grade (the best grade level in the world), then several years in a small, bilingual charter school, teaching the English component to grades K-5. Following that, I picked up and gentled an unruly 5th grade class at a K-5 public school and then 3 years in 1st Grade -- during 2 of which I taught the Spanish component for a bilingual program in Las Vegas.
Never wanted to teach Kinder, but a few years ago I found myself in that position and found out I LOVE working with these bright little sponges (at least after the first 6 weeks)! It amazes me how much they grow and change throughout the school year. In no other grade level does one witness such a tremendous transformation in the course of a few short months!

Squealing or Informing - When is it okay to tell? (Lesson on Tattling)
Tattling is a big distraction in the classroom, particularly in Kinder-2nd grade. This activity is designed to help students recognize when it's appropriate to "tell" and when they should attempt to handle problems independently. It is meant to be used in conjunction with the book Don't Squeal Unless It's a Big Deal by Jeanie Franz Ransom.
This set includes 52 piggie cards addressing common concerns found in grades K-2 and two title cards for sorting.

Sock It To Me Rhyming Game
This game contains rhyming CVC words for Kinder and 1st grade students and can be used several ways:
1. Students can simply practice blending CVC words during small group instruction or with a friend.
2. Using a smaller number of paired cards, students may play Match It by turning over two cards at a time and identifying the rhyming pairs.
3. The game can be played like "Go Fish" with each player receiving 5 cards to begin the game and then asking for " . . .a word that rhymes with ____."

My Book of 2D Christmas Shapes
This 8 page book was designed to help K/1, ELL and special needs students practice basic 2D shapes in a fun, creative and memorable way.
This activity includes an original poem for each page, black-line masters for the cut & paste items, and directions needed to complete each page.

Flip Flop Addition
This math activity allows students to explore the Commutative Property of Addition in a fun, stress free manner that allows them to develop and intuitive understanding. It's perfect for small group instruction and center time.
In my Kindergarten class, we refer to the Commutative Property of Addition as Flippy Flopping Numbers. My students enjoy manipulating numbers and are building awareness of the Commutative Property which they will learn formally later.

Kindergarten Taste Test - The Five Senses
This activity is part of a unit on the 5 senses and is designed to help Kinder students explore the sense of taste. They will also build related vocabulary through firsthand experience. Over the years, it's been one of my students' favorite activities -- one that they remember and refer back to regularly.

This file contains tens frame game boards, 20's frame game boards and number cards, as well as information on the rationale, preparation and use of the game boards.
I've used this game to help students who have struggled with one to one correspondence, counting objects, reading numbers and matching numbers to a given quantity.
My students love it and provides them with the extra practice they need to master these important skills.

Teaching style
I'm a kind and loving teacher who feels it's incredibly important for students to learn independence and self-confidence. Our class motto is "We can do hard things." and I spend the year helping students recognize their ability to accomplish "hard things." Given the choice, I'd teach strictly via thematic units, like I did in the "old days", with project based learning.

My hubby and I have been married more than a decade and live with our Morky (Maltese/Yorkie mix), Eli. In my free time, I enjoy medieval camping with the SCA, cooking, genealogical research, family reunions and creating stories, songs, games, poems, etc. to help provide my students with additional skill practice and enjoyable learning experiences!
