I have 33 years of experience in education: from teaching students in Kindergarten, primary grades, intermediate, and middle schoolers to serving as a Math Consultant, Adjunct Faculty member at the University of Louisville, a middle school instructional coach, pre-K through 12th grade Literacy and Instructional Coach. I also spent 6 years as a policy advocate at the local, state and federal level for policies to address the more vulnerable students: early childhood and P -12 education, child welfare, health (oral health, mental health), and safety and justice.

Estimating Sums of Fractions with UNlike Denominators using Benchmark Fractions
Students use the Benchmark Fractions of 0, 1/2, and 1 to estimate the sum of two fractions with UNlike denominators. This lesson utilizes Fraction Bars and a fraction numberline to determine if the sum is less than, greater than or equal to 1 whole.
The lesson specifically supports the 5th grade Standard 5.NF.1 and 5.NF.2 and can be modified to support 4.NF.3d which involve the operations of addition and subtraction of fractions with and without unlike denominators.

Fraction Bar War: Comparing Fractions with Unlike Denominators
Remember playing "War" with playing cards when we were kids? This game takes the students through a similar game, but with a twist: with Fraction Bars. You can either have students make the fraction bars with paper or purchase your own.
