This is mostly only for high schools. It is a way to show students that canvases can be very complex. I will go over the various cultures and history of tattoos. I also go over the effects of poor tattoos and cultural responses. This is something that I give to students that are generally harder to connect to or that are already set on going into tattooing. It is a great resource to encourage students to plan ahead and think about the body as a canvas.
This is a nice project for students to get into. I like telling my high schoolers that they can make a living designing and producing T shirts. This gets them so excited they spend a lot of time and effort in this assignment. It is also a simple assignment that you can cover all the elements of art and principles of design in. I have included them in the instructions so students can reference them later. Using these terms is a form of establishing academic language.
A fun way to teach students symmetry. I have the cards divided in to quarters showing the center lines. I have students create their own theme cards. There are so many examples online of other that have created their own versions of regular cards. It helps illustrate students interests and is generally a quick project students get highly invested in. Showing them off is fun too.
These are great to have on hand for the moments you need some breathing room. I love having students work on these for the first couple of days of class in the year when students are transferring in and out of my classes. It is a fun challenge for students and it helps them with their observational skills. This is a must for subs that get stuck without a lesson plan or for the students that try to convince you they completed all their work already. This is also a great assignment for teachers th
This is a great assignment for cultural integration. Traditionally a Mexican art, this project can borrow from several cultural symbols to create interesting patterns. I had a Native American girl put her own cultural twist on this and it was amazing. I try to stress the concepts of symmetry and asymmetry when students design theirs. I like leaving this for Día de los Muertos, or right around the end of October beginning of November.
This is a 4 page packet students can complete online and fill out the PDF form on their computer or print out and complete. I have to create several of these for my art students since the school has closed down over the Coronavirus. This packet covers China and Japan. It should take about 2 hours to complete.
