Grade Level: 5th–8th Grade Math Focus: Data Collection, Measurement, Mean, Median, and Range Overview: Acorn Averages is an engaging, hands-on fall math activity that takes learning outdoors. Students collect at least five acorns, measure each in centimeters, and record their data. They then calculate the mean, median, and range of their measurements. This real-world application of data analysis encourages critical thinking, accuracy in measurement, and a connection between math and nature. L
This SmartBoard presentation will assist in teaching students who need more support with understanding how to add and subtract positive and negative numbers.
Some students are able to memorize the rules or use a number line to assist them. Others need a visual that they can manipulate.
This provides a manipulative and also gives students an opportunity to visualize why a negative that is being subtracted, is actually the same as adding a positive.
I used this as an intervention to re-teach
