This performance task asks students to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in a real-world situation throughout 5 rigorous problems. Great practice/review for SBAC testing!

In this performance task, students are asked to solve problems using strategies that include the modeling of multiplication using arrays and relating these models to mathematical equations, solve problems that involve multiplying whole numbers by multiples of 10, arguing/critiquing the reasoning of others, and providing an argument with evidence to solve a problem. This performance task has five parts, dependent on each other, that address multiplication and division. Students will be asked to solve multiplication and division problems involving two classrooms attending a trip to the movie theater. They will also be asked to design a seating chart (DOK level 4) for the manager of the movie theater using their knowledge of multiplication and division. This is more than students practicing computation (though they will do that too!). This activity asks students to explain their thinking, compare operations, discuss strategies, error analysis, and more.

This is a spiral review of 4th grade math standards including multiplication, division, adding fractions, fractions on a number line, comparing fractions, prime/composite numbers, and more. Students will answer questions to collect treats for their puppy!

Print and laminate these cards for each student. I put them in a pencil box with other manipulatives like linker cubes, counting bears, and a whiteboard marker/eraser. Great for quick and easy hands-on activities!

Perhaps no symbol in elementary school math is as important or misunderstood as the equal sign. For many students, this symbol is interpreted as meaning write the answer, which can limited a student's understanding with balancing equations (i.e. 5+8=___+4). This template provides a space for teachers to pose the question What does = mean to you? to be used as an assessment to gain knowledge about where their students' understanding of the equal sign is.
