This performance task asks students to multiply, divide, compare fractions, tell time, add, subtract, and more. It is designed to help increase the stamina of students in preparation for the Smarter Balance Assessment performance task.
This task asks students to solve some constructed response questions involving division of unit fractions and whole numbers. Students will also multiply decimals and be asked to write a letter than explains mathematically why one sugar substitute is a better deal than another. Standards: 5.NF.7; 5.NF.7a; 5.NF.7b; 5.NF.7c Claim 2: Problem Solving Mathematical Practice 2: Reason abstractly and quantitatively
This task involves multi-step and dependent questions that involve all basic operations and comparing unit fractions. It also asks students to identify and solve a real-world problem of not having enough of something.
This is a 4-part task that puts students into a real-life scenario of weeding and planting a garden. This tasks involves operations with fractions, whole numbers, and time conversions. Great practice for SBAC and building math stamina!
This task asks students to determine fraction as equal parts, understand fractional sets/groups, partition shapes into equal areas, locate fractions on a number line, and compare fractions.

This document contains the Smarter Balanced Question Stems for 4th grade Claim 1, Number and Operations: Fractions. DOK level, standard, and how the students are scored on each type of question are also provided. This can be used as a projectable to review fractions or as a teaching tool for test taking strategies. Answer key included.
This task mimics the look of the Smarter Balanced Performance Task for 5th grade and asks students to answer DOK 1, 2, and 3 level questions. Great to prepare our students for the SBAC.
To be used for SBAC test prep, specifically the performance tasks. The questions ask students to use fractions to determine the amount of paint needed to paint several rooms of a house, as well as agree or disagree with the reasoning of another.
This item reviews math concepts for 5th grade using the Smarter Balanced question stems. Following each question is the answer as well as the scoring rubric, so teachers and students will better understand how each type of Claim 2 question will be scored.
This item reviews math concepts for 5th grade using the Claim 4 Smarter Balanced question stems. Following each question is the answer, as well as the scoring rubric, so teachers and students will better understand how each type of Claim 4 question will be scored.
I've noticed most kids have area/perimeter down when the problem states outright "Find the area/perimeter." However, I've found they struggle much more when given a scenario that doesn't tell them which to find. So I've created a set of ten that not only challenge them to determine which one to find, but also have multiple steps.
50 rigorous word problems appropriate for upper elementary students. Each page has one word problem, plus work space, a place to write the answer, and lines to explain how the problem was solved. These problems cover a variety of math concepts, including multi-step problems, operations, fractions, decimals, measurement, and more. Answer key is included.
Using both the Smarter Balanced math question stems and sample items, these word problems will ask students to both write equations and solve problems that include all operations with fractions, money, area, volume and more. A great way to review before testing.
This item reviews math concepts for 5th grade using the Smarter Balanced Claim 3 question stems. Following each question is the answer as well as the scoring rubric, so teachers and students will better understand how each type of Claim 3 question will be scored.
This performance task asks students to draw models and/or write equations to determine a real-world scenario of finding a fraction of a fraction. Included is the critical thinking of determining what would happen to the fractional cost should the total cost double. Great for test prep!
