The Alchemist Final Project This final project is the culmination of a unit surrounding The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho. It requires students to write creatively, fulfilling many writing standards, as they write both an original narrative as well as song lyrics. While it is based on The Alchemist, it could be edited to be a stand-alone assignment/project or at the end of reading any creative text(s). This document includes the assignment as well as the grading rubric(s).

The Alchemist Reading Quizzes Two forms (A and B) of SEVEN reading quizzes spanning the length of The Alchemist by Paulo Coehlo. Quizzes are based on comprehension with some inference and reader opinion. There is a mix of short answer, multiple choice, and true/false.

Disney Song Analysis Activity Taught with The Alchemist in preparation for a final project, but can be used in any poetry unit as a review of skills or an assessment of skills learned, etc. Students love to find poetic devices using these classic Disney songs. Also great annotation practice.

The Alchemist Exploring Beliefs Worksheet This worksheet should be done in the second half of reading The Alchemist by Paulo Coehlo. This worksheet asks students to reflect on Sanitago's beliefs as well as their own to identify both Santiago's and their own worldview. This activity takes about a half hour to forty-five minutes but could easily stretch, especially with the addition of a reflection piece.

The Alchemist Literary Device Chart Students will track Paulo Coehlo's use of various literary devices and their meanings/effect in his book The Alchemist.
