About the store
I'm an educational specialist with 26 years of experience. I started my career as a visual arts instructor and yearbook advisor for both middle school and high school students. After seven years, I left full-time teaching to begin a family. For the next five years I worked various part-time jobs teaching art to upper elementary and to middle school alternative ed students. During this time I earned my multiple subject credential. When my oldest started kindergarten I decided to go back to teaching full-time. I wanted to be an elementary teacher. There were no job openings. I was asked to fill a long-term sub position for a
4th/5th grade special education class. I loved it! I became an intern and earned an educational specialist credential. This is my 14th year of teaching special education. Every year (day) in special ed is different. This year our school opened a Learning Center. We run four groups to meet diverse needs all at the same time. The Learning Center provides intervention to general education students, direct IEP services to SPED students, and supports ELD students.

Teaching style
My teaching style is creative and positive. I have a big bag of tricks to hook students into learning, remembering, and applying skills. First, students who are struggling have to feel safe. Secondly, students have to have their needs met. Then, students are able to make big progress and feel success. Success builds more success. Engaging students through visual, auditory, and
kinesthetic activities as well as making personal connection with them is my teaching style.
Awards & shining teacher moments
I am honored to have my name on the perpetual plaque at the Modoc County Office of Education for being chosen "Person of the Year" for 2004. This award was given for outstanding service to students with special needs by the Modoc County Community Advisory Committee.
