This set of 23 word searches was made to practice the spelling of frequently misspelled words. I liked using them in my class both individually and in team races. The students could be heard softly saying the letters as they looked which provided both auditory and visual practice as well as the kinesthetic practice as they circled or highlighted the word. Some students preferred using highlighter and I often provided a 5" piece of color transparency to help them with visualization.

The novel Breaker by N.A. Perez is set in the early 1900's in the coal mines of PA. I have used this book as part of a interdisciplinary unit on the Industrial Revolution. As part of a unit on poetry the students create their own notebook. We would type some of them on the computer and paste in clip art. Some of the poems would be handwritten on fancy paper. This was a favorite project that both students and parents loved. The students often added some other writing samples. It was displayed at an "Author's Fair" at the end of the year. The notebook became a cherished keepsake to remember the year.

A favorite activity in my school which combines hands-on/ cooperative learning with mathematics. A number of variations make this activity adaptable to multiple grade levels. Everyone makes mistakes and has a bad day. The important thing is to learn from those mistakes. I used this for over ten years in my class to train the students to look back over their papers. The students who took advantage of the policy saw their grades increase as well as their math proficiency. I saw my end of year test scores increase. It was a win-win!
