The novel Breaker by N.A. Perez is set in the early 1900's in the coal mines of PA. I have used this book as part of a interdisciplinary unit on the Industrial Revolution. The unit I made includes three spelling and vocabulary lists with tests, answer keys and activities. The spelling tests are made to choose the correct one out of four choices. As part of a unit on poetry the students create their own notebook. We would type some of them on the computer and paste in clip art. Some of the poems would be handwritten on fancy paper. This was a favorite project that both students and parents loved. The students often added some other writing samples. It was displayed at an "Author's Fair" at the end of the year. The notebook became a cherished keepsake to remember the year.

A favorite activity in my school which combines hands-on/ cooperative learning with mathematics. A number of variations make this activity adaptable to multiple grade levels. Topics which work well with this activity are; congruence, similarity, rectangular vs square, fractional parts, and bisecting angles/angle measurements. This is an outline that I made for my students. They had no prior experience with research and writing a report. It was useful for my students and I hope it will be useful for your students as well!

Everyone makes mistakes and has a bad day. The important thing is to learn from those mistakes. I used this for over ten years in my class to train the students to look back over their papers. The students who took advantage of the policy saw their grades increase as well as their math proficiency. I saw my end of year test scores increase. It was a win-win!
