Math Meets Music

This set of guided notes is a fun way to teach your students the musical applications of transformations of sinusoidal functions. First, your students will locate an app on GeoGebra to both see and hear the difference in the note as its frequency (and thus period) and amplitude change. They will record a general sine function to represent each note, and then look at graphs of sine waves and determine which note they represent. Finally, they will write a piecewise function to represent the sou

This is a PowerPoint presentation on the properties of modular arithmetic. This is a perfect tool for a college discrete mathematics class. This presentation is best used in a lecture setting where you still want the students to be actively participating. Proofs for the rules of modular addition and modular multiplication are provided, but students are guided to make conjectures through exploration first. A brief review of divisibility is also provided.

This lab teaches students the basics of free body diagrams, modeling free fall with drag forces from parachutes, and finding an optimal solution to an engineering problem. Guided notes with an answer key are provided to give students a mathematical background on the project before attempting to drop an egg with a parachute! The object of the lab is for students to find the optimal shape of a parachute.

This activity is a great review of all things radians, from arc length, to finding exact values of trig functions, to properties of cofunctions! Each exercise is assigned a color, and when the students find an answer, they will use that color to color in every section of their mandala that is labeled with that answer. Miss D's fun tip: hang up all of the mandalas around the classroom when the students finish!

Triangle's Angles Always Sum to 180

Created by
Math4Teachers
This lesson teaches students that in planar geometry, the sum of the measures of the interior angles of a triangle is always 180 degrees. The lesson starts with an exploratory exercise on GeoGebra, looking at the angle measures of a triangle. (This can easily be replicated on paper with pencil and protractor, if necessary). Then, the teacher will guide the students in a formal proof using parallel lines that is simplified to the middle school level. After that, students will be guided in an

Engage (5 minutes):Explain a brief history of Euclid, Elements, and geometric constructionsState learning objective and corresponding common core standard 2. Explore (5 minutes):Paper folding activity: Lead students through a paper folding activity that creates a perpendicular bisector, without telling them what they are creating. Gui

Introduction to Cross Multiplication

Created by
Math4Teachers
This lesson has contains guided notes and an answer key for a lesson on cross multiplication. Students will first do a real life baking problem involving proportions. They will then be asked to compare their answer with the original problem and make a conjecture about a shortcut. Students will then be guided in proving that cross multiplication always works. Finally, students will solve a problem with and without cross multiplication, to convince them that both methods work, but cross-multip

This lesson teaches students how to apply information about normal distributions, means, standard deviations, and z-scores from real life data about height. The focus of this lesson is conceptual understanding; students will not be computing any standard deviations. However, they will use a given mean, standard deviation, and normal distribution to compute z-scores and percentiles for their own height, their classmates' heights, and celebrities' heights.

Teaching style

I like to involve my students in the learning process as much as possible. I believe that students learn math by doing it. However, I also believe that students need modeling, scaffolding, and guidance throughout the learning process. I often guide my students by giving them specific questions. I also love to create analogies for my students and relate material to real life.
