About the store
I am a speech language pathologist working in an elementary school with self-contained students ranging from severely-mildly intellectually disabled to autistic (mild, moderate, severe). Many of my kiddos have no words (using pictures or AAC), some have 1-3 words, and some have simple sentences. I have been teaching for more than 30 years.

Vocabulary Pictures for Turkey Trouble

I did a lesson in a classroom using the book Turkey Trouble which I found on YouTube. I used these pictures on a Big Mack during the lesson for my severely intellectually disabled student. The teacher sat next to him and helped him choose from 2 (cut out) then she changed the word in the Big Mack to match so he could "say" the word when I paused the video and asked questions. The Big Mack had double sided (I think it is called Nano Tape) tape on it so the pics stuck easily. The rest of the ki

Yes/no is not an easy concept at all for children with autism who also have intellectual disabilities. This book may not be appropriate for many virtually nonverbal children with autism to answer. Reading it to any student is great but for some children, it is important to answer the question for them. You may even want to just read the book for vocabulary or single word responses and skip the yes/no part. Up to you! I generally share this book on the smart board then I have them find the wo

This is a little social story to help kids know what to say when they are non-verbal or virtually non-verbal. The book has 1-2 words and should be read as often as possible to kiddos as a downloaded book, up on the whiteboard with the projector, or on a smart board, etc. After reading several times, see if your kiddos can use the words to "fill in the blank" or use their AAC devices to fill in the words when you pause. Obviously the "yes" and "no" parts are hard but it doesn't hurt to have ex

This is so important for kiddos who may be virtually non-verbal, non-verbal, or just may not know they can take power to take a small break. I use this as a PECS picture when I am working with a student. They can give it to me, say it when I point or I can use it as a reminder to get them to say it on their AAC devices. I then give them a 1 or 2 minute break. Sometimes I use fidgets or sometimes I let them get up and walk around. When I want the fidget back, I model for them "I want toy" and

This is an interactive book that has sentence strips at the end to insert into the book. This is a cut and paste book which is for children who can say 4+ words or emerging into 4 words from 2 or 3 words. It has worked like a charm for my kiddos. We save lunch and breakfast food when the kids are throwing away their lunch and breakfast from our self-contained classes and we use Nerds as candy because they are small and motivating and not too much sugar at one time.

I created several choices of the same product so that you can use the one you like best. This product is meant to be used as an activity daily for preschoolers, children with autism, intellectually disabled, or children with apraxia of speech to encourage the use of 2 words either verbally or with AAC. It could also be displayed near the classroom door either on the wall or on the door to encourage children to say these words before they go somewhere in the school. When on the playground, tea

This social story was born when I taught an ABA self-contained classroom and there were students who did not want to walk down the hall to come to speech. I had a small, soft plush heart keychain they could hold while they walked down the hall. It was a transition toy that I always carried with me when I went to get those kiddos. It would also be great with emotional behavioral disordered children. I also paired it with my work/break sheet that can be found for free on my TPT.

This very simple apple Power point was made for children who may be autistic and/or are on the lower end of the intelligence quotient (intellectually disabled). It is a short non-fiction presentation with questions including picture choices. The last wh-question does not have pictures because I did not want to give the answer away with the picture in option 1. The second set of the same wh-questions has the pictures for the last question (option 2). The last option (option 3) basically has t

I always try to find the absolute BEST toys in my room. They are great motivators for getting kids to speak as well as a great reward for first/then. In this case I use work/break or speech/break. I go over it at the beginning of the lesson then obviously in the middle and end and they get to check it off if they would like. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't! Same with first/then!
