I am a speech language pathologist working in an elementary school with self-contained students ranging from severely-mildly intellectually disabled to autistic (mild, moderate, severe). Many of my kiddos have no words (using pictures or AAC), some have 1-3 words, and some have simple sentences. I have been teaching for more than 30 years.

"First/Then" for speech as Work/Break
I always try to find the absolute BEST toys in my room. They are great motivators for getting kids to speak as well as a great reward for first/then. In this case I use work/break or speech/break. I go over it at the beginning of the lesson then obviously in the middle and end and they get to check it off if they would like. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't! Same with first/then!

Teaching style
I always teach the concepts that the child needs first then I take data. Never just take data without teaching!!!!!

In 1998 or 1999 I won teacher of the year for my school.
My own education history
I have an undergraduate degree in speech corrections, a master's degree in speech pathology and a specialist degree in leadership.
