Experience
I have over 13 years of educational experience; from substitute and classroom teacher, to department chair, to educational consultant. I have taught primarily economically disadvantaged students in various educational settings; from standard public schools to nationally renown charter schools such as KIPP. I have also consulted schools and organizations in the areas of classroom/school culture, mathematical engagement, and the Common Core Math Standards for Mathematical Practice.
Teaching style
As a classroom teacher I learned quickly that urban students are not passive subjects who can easily be molded to conform to educators’ expectations. This led me to create mathematical lessons and supplemental materials which are academically rigorous, atypical in design, and as relevant and engaging as possible for under performing students.
Awards & shining teacher moments
The personal privilege of producing African-America and Latino algebra students from challenging environments who consistently outperformed the district and state average for arithmetic and Algebra I.
My own education history
I graduated from Santa Monica City College, Cal State Northridge, and attended the Emory School of law. More recently, I earned my Masters of Education degree from Pepperdine University. My master’s thesis was titled, “The Scoring Gap: How to increase African-American Males’ Proficiency in Mathematics."
