I use this when I start my 6th graders on integers and comparing negative numbers. We put zero in the middle of all number lines and complete a vertical and horizontal number line with integers and a vertical and horizontal number line with decimals. We use the phrases on it to help remember how to compare, and we do a few comparisons together with the greater than and less than symbols. There are also two websites listed that have digital and interactive number lines that students can use.

Students work in groups to brainstorm opposite ideas related to positive and negative values. I find that many 6th graders need scaffolding on real life concepts to understand positive and negative numbers and opposites before they work on word problems involving integers. There are blank spaces for students to add new words that they come across when they are working on real life problems related to positive and negative numbers.
