Decimal Operations: Let's Go on a Road Trip

I created this road trip simulation as an end of unit activity to bring decimal operations to life for my students.  Calculations involving money is just one way that students will interact with decimals in the real world. I use this activity in my fifth grade classroom, but the difficulty level could be adjusted to fit the needs of the students in your grade level.  For example, teachers could incorporate rates (7th grade) by inviting students to calculate the gallons of gas necessary for the t

Experience

In my 17 years of teaching, I have taught 5th-8th grades Math, Social Studies, and/or Science!

Teaching style

I want students to view learning as more than just math. In my classroom, we focus on being better mathematicians, but also better people while bringing math to life and connecting it to daily life. I strive to incorporate a wide range of activities, including a multitude of technology and creative, interactive, hands-on explorations in an attempt to "reach" and engage every child. I teach critical thinking and problem-solving skills through inquiry-based instruction. I have tried to build a classroom that provides a safe learning environment, where students feel free to make mistakes while learning, and are encouraged to take intellectual risks. My job goes far beyond teaching students the standards. I am also responsible for educating them in a way that ensures each and every learner will reach his/her highest potential and leave my class on a daily basis with a hunger to learn more than just math.
