I have taught significant figures for years because I was told to teach it. It wasn’t until I developed this activity that I felt like I was able to better show students what significant figures mean in terms of precision and measurement. It also helps distinguish between precision & accuracy, as those terms get confused all of the time! In part 1, students use fake rulers to measure various lines and discuss precision and accuracy. This lesson is a great way for students to discover for themselves the formula of the speed of the wave. In part 1, students draw transverse waves and then use a ruler to measure the wavelength, frequency and calculate the speed. In part 2, students work through guided and independent practice problems for solving the equations for speed, wavelengths, frequency, and period.
