Learning about probability? Do your students enjoy math centres? Then this is for you! Four math centres using popular games: 1) Rock, Paper, Scissors 2) Twister 3) Go Fish and 4) Pig. Students fill out the accompanying worksheets as they rotate centres.

Working in partners, students pick different game sheets. Students mark their spots with a counter. Students play rock, paper, scissors. Winner moves their counter up one spot and answers the conversion question. If they are correct, they stay where they are. If they are wrong, they move back one space. First player to the top, wins. Game deals with converting metres to centimetres and kilometres to metres.

Students learn about probability through the simple game of rock, paper, scissors. Students fill out the accompanying worksheet.

Use this notebook file with your SMARTboard to learn about the different types of patterns with pattern blocks.

Appropriate for grade 4 number patterns.

Use a virtual manipulative website (or actual manipulatives) and have students see how many of these patterns they can create.

Present three different 3D shapes (e.g. triangular prism, square-based pyramid, hexagonal based prism) to students and have them identify properties (e.g. edges, faces, vertices) relating to each shape. Good one on one assessment tool.

Students can fill out the blank Bingo card with numbers 1-30. The teacher calls out/writes on the board various number patterns each with one missing number (ranging from 1-30). If students have that number, they cover that space. First one to get a line, wins!

Students practice constructing triangles based on side lengths and angles.

Students work in partners. For each partner, give them a copy of the handout. Have students cut out the cards (40 in total). Students take turns solving for the unknown variable. If they get it right, they can mark their spot on a tic tac toe board (you can use a whiteboard and whiteboard markers, for example). First one to get three in a row, wins!

Appropriate for grade 3 number patterns.

Open this PowerPoint document and print off as a 6 per page handout. Mix them up and have students make piles of equivalent fractions!

Write the first three terms of a number patterns on paint chips, etc. and students continue the pattern on this worksheet. Page 2 and 3 can be used as a template for your own number pattern activities.

Students can fill this in alongside the teacher (or individually) to review main concepts related to patterning.
