About the store
After working in the geology field after undergrad I realized my love (and inherited career love from my mom) of teaching. I received my MAT from NC State University with a focus in high school science. During my time at NC State I had a wonderful student teaching experience at a public high school in Johnston County, NC. Since graduating I have worked in various charter schools in Washington, DC and Durham, NC. I have experience teaching 6th (Earth Science) and 7th grade (biology) science as well as high school Earth Science. I have also been an ESL teacher for students in grades K-5, so my language focus quite often appears in my lessons and materials. I have been a contract curriculum writer for the top-performing charter school in DC and have written NGSS-based curriculum for grades 4-8. I am a very thoughtful planner for both academic instruction as well as social skills.

The following document is a short homework worksheet for upper elementary grades and middle school grades. The homework exposes students to the formation of testable, scientific questions, that are based off of different observations. There are several examples and then opportunities for students to create their own scientific questions. This homework is great to use when introducing students to the scientific method at the beginning of the year.

Middle School Microscope Introduction Activity

Ms Mann Science
The following lesson and materials introduces students to compound light microscopes- how they work, how they are used, and how scientists record their observations from them. The activity involves students utilizing a text and diagrams to help them understand microscopes. I also suggest that students have a chance to practice use of microscopes after they gain a basic understanding of how they work. Suggested time for this lesson is 45 minutes- 1 hour.

Teaching style

A positive classroom culture is the foundation for my teaching and my instruction. I incorporate the 5 E learning cycle as well as social skills into my lessons. My curriculum and lessons are aligned to the NGSS performance expectations and include lessons for middle school science (6-8), 4th grade, and 5th grade.

Awards & shining teacher moments

The 8th grade students at my school in DC voted to have me give the commencement address in 2015. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZN_BuI2WnSM

My own education history

BS in Geology from UNC-Wilmington. MA in Teaching from NC State University.

Additional biographical information

About me: I am currently a K-5 ESL teacher while doing contract curriculum work for grades 4-8 at the top-performing charter school in Washington DC. I love baby animals and all things Harry Potter. Follow me on twitter and instagram! @msmannscience! About my TpT store: As a first-year teacher many, many moons ago, I found it difficult to find usable materials online. I promise to provide just as many free materials as priced items in hopes to help teachers in need of materials. As for my priced items, I am choosing to have faith in my fellow teachers and will keep all of my documents in Microsoft word so that people can edit my materials to make them suit their own needs and the needs of their students. I trust that no one will use my materials to make profit for themselves.
