Students use toothpicks to make squares. They then use the squares to compare side lengths and discover the relationships of similar figures and ratios without too much direct instruction. The teacher can walk around to facilitate and quickly address misconceptions while students work to deepen their understanding.
An activity using double sided counters to help students understand and explore how percentages, proportionality, and probability are all somewhat related.
