Match the events of the story in sequence to really comprehend what happened when in the tragic story of Macbeth. This is a great activity to do with class in pairs to make sure that students are familiar with the story. It is also a great team activity. Give teams a time! How quickly can they piece together the story in an accurate manner?
A perfect way to deconstruct and discuss Owen's poem Dulce et Decorum Est. Why did Owen write this poem? Can you find similes, metaphors, personification and irony? A bitter mood, harsh conditions and yet poignant and tragic in imagery. Get your students acquainted with the subjects of this poetry.
How flexible are your students in working with tense and pronoun changes? This is something that my students struggle with and therefore need solid practice. These excerpts are based on the novel, The Giver by Lois Lowry. The exercise has original passages that have been written in first person, present tense. Students are asked to move the verbs into past where appropriate. The exercise also asks them to change the text from first person to third person narrative. It gets them thinking!

These two activities are great for an introductory phase in a unit on War Poets of WWI. Did Wilfred Owen throw a Military Cross into the Mersey or was it Siegfried Sassoon? Did Wilfred Owen dedicate Dulce et Decorum Est to his mother or to poetess Jessie Pope? Get your students comfortable in understanding the background to Owen's writing. Quick quizzes and cloze exercises are great for pair-share work and collaborative learning time.
If you are studying Seamus Heaney, you should download the podcast of the Desert Island interview with this poet in 1989. This resource is a wonderful complement to that interview with questions directly related to the interview and the poet's responses.
