Need a short story that can be read in one period? Looking for an appropriate story to share with your kids for Halloween? Look no further...... A favorite for my 6th graders, this lesson is perfect for Halloween. While you read the scary story "Family Dinner," play scary music to set the mood. The story is sure to engage students. There are questions that follow, that most students will be eager to do after reading the story. This is probably one of my favorite lessons to do with my kids.

Scary Halloween lesson for "The Jigsaw Puzzle" by J.B. Stamper. There is a do now, guided notes, guided practice, a demonstration of learning, stop and jot questions (to lead to theme), pre-reading, and then independent practice with the story where students find the theme and two pieces of evidence to support their theme. The lesson is a little long (~60 minutes), but a lot can be cut out. The longest part will be reading the story. I am planning on doing this lesson on Friday with my kids

Using the Brown V. Board article, teach students how to respond to articles using sentence stems (perfect for LEP and SPED students, as well as struggling readers). This lesson offers scaffolding for struggling students, but can easily be adapted to increase rigor. An awesome activity to do with ALL grade level students and it can be adapted to ALL content areas. This PowerPoint features songs on all slides and animations. My students thoroughly enjoyed this activity. Note: the last slide is blank, but can be filled with any activity you choose. I.E, students can pull out 4-5 main details that led them to their summary. This lesson is designed to teach students how to synthesize important details in a reading selection for the main ideas.

This engaging article on vampire texting includes reading STAAR aligned questions, guided notes, pre, during, and post reading activities, and an extension exercise. My students really loved reading this article, and were engaged after the pre-writing they did. This lesson is #2 after their first introduction to making inferences, use it as a supplement after learning what making an inference is.

Teach characterization in a fun and unique way! I gave students dating profiles and they had to "figure out" what kind of "character" each person was, given the different details they have on their profiles (direct characterization). Then, they had to figure out who would make the "best match" for me! All profiles were not used, pick and use which ones are the most appropriate for your class.

Plot and summarization using "The Flowers" by Alice Walker. I introduce plot with my "Paul the Plot Man," where each part of his body represents an element of plot (ex: top of head = climax because the top of your head is important) Then, students do a prereading activity, during reading stop and jots, as well as the elements of plot chart.
