This activity is designed to reinforce the concept of pure substances using models of elements, compounds, and mixtures. Students sort 20 cards on three different sorting boards. This activity is an engaging way to formatively assess student understanding of the difference between elements and compounds. The examples include multiple representations of both elements and compounds to familiarize students with different representations and to assess their ability to transfer knowledge to different representations.
