I wrote this story for my Spanish 1 students last year. I introduced it toward the beginning of the year after introducing GUSTAR and love it because they really see how much they can understand after just a short time in Spanish class. It is also a great way to reinforce cognates, as this story is cognate-laden! Plus, Harry Potter references which never seem to get old.
