In this project, students will use the math computation and historical context of the Homestead Act of 1862 to calculate possible perimeters (fencing) for homesteads of 160 acres. Students will use area, perimeter, arrays, factors, fractions, scale, and exact measurement of units to "prove up!"

This project is aligned to 5th grade NGSS and requires minimal materials. Students focus primarily on 3 Crosscutting Concepts: Cause and effect, structure and function, and patterns.
