About the store
After working as a reading clinician at Lindamood-Bell during college, Dennis developed the "literacy bug." Now, for more than two decades, he has worked at the intersection of school psychology, literacy intervention, and data-driven instruction. From 1999–2007, he directed prevention and after-school literacy programs in the Central Valley, CA. Those initiatives coincided with California Distinguished School recognition (2006), federal AYP success (2007), and a Title I Academic Achievement Award (~2010)—while neighboring districts entered Program Improvement. Since then, Dennis has conducted 1,000+ psychoeducational evaluations and delivered hundreds of one-to-one interventions for students with dyslexia, dysgraphia, ADHD, autism, and other learning profiles. He tracks growth with alternate forms of CTOPP, WIAT, and WJ, documenting consistent, statistically meaningful pre/post gains that translate directly to classroom reading and writing performance.

Experience

Teaching style

Dennis’s instructional approach is grounded in the cognitive science of how language skills develop and transfer. He emphasizes process-based learning, training the underlying systems of reading and writing—phonological, orthographic, morphological, and syntactic—so that gains occur not only in specific tasks but across the entire language network. Each lesson integrates subword, word, and text-level processes in close temporal proximity, allowing the brain to consolidate new skills efficiently and apply them immediately to authentic reading and writing contexts. Instruction is explicit yet adaptive, balancing structure with responsiveness to each learner’s profile. The result is a model that cultivates deep understanding, automaticity, and flexible problem-solving—producing measurable growth and greater independence in learners of all ages and ability levels.

Awards & shining teacher moments

Over the years, I’ve been recognized by administrators and colleagues for innovative evaluation practices and for helping teams identify and support students who were previously misunderstood or overlooked. My proudest moments are when parents and students finally understand why learning has been hard—and realize it’s not about effort or intelligence, but about how the brain processes information. Seeing that relief and confidence return is the greatest reward. California Distinguished School (2006) – Central Valley CA, recognizing Dennis’s literacy-prevention leadership. AYP Met (2007) – while many Merced County schools entered Program Improvement, Livingston USD rose above federal benchmarks. Documented Individual Results: students in his one-to-one interventions have shown rapid normalization on CTOPP RAN/RAS, WIAT Word Reading and Spelling, and WJ Basic Reading clusters—often shifting from risk to average range within a single term.

My own education history

After majoring psychology at Biola University, I earned my graduate degree in School Psychology and My continuing education has focused on the cognitive foundations of literacy and learning, including advanced training in neuropsychological assessment, dyslexia diagnostics, and intervention design. I stay active in professional learning communities focused on evidence-based literacy instruction, cognitive processing, and executive functions.

Additional biographical information

When I’m not writing or testing, you’ll probably find me on a golf course, reading research on cognitive processes, or brainstorming new app ideas that bridge neuroscience and education. I’m passionate about helping students unlock their potential through tools that make learning both scientific and human. My ultimate goal is to make these insights accessible to every teacher and parent—because every child deserves to understand how their mind works.
