The skills are point of view, character traits, conflict, theme, figurative, and descriptive language.

The scavenger hunt is used to acquire prior knowledge about the author and other important elements of the story to have an in depth novel study. The following activity activates prior knowledge of the setting, historical context, and other plot elements that are found within "The Cay." Hatchet Bookmark Questions Students will respond to comprehension questions that coincide with each chapter of the story, Hatchet as they read. The comprehension questions will call for students to identify, examine, evaluate, infer, illustrate, analyze, and cite evidence when responding and answering. Teachers will have choice in the projects that they construct for their independent reading novels or class novels. Students will have an array of choices such as creating a book review,story chains, interview, model an event (diorama),test, newspaper,diary, ad campaign,children's storybook/comic book,sequel, scrapbook, and their own idea. Rubrics are also included for each project as well as their project description.

The Snowglobe Rubric coincides with the narrative writing assignment. The rubric is out of 33 points; it consists of the 6+1 writing traits and few other topic areas.

This event or lesson allows students to choose books and explore new genres that they would never usually read by not judging a book by its cover. Students will choose books based on keywords that are written on the bag about the book. I have included some pictures from my own event to help get a better idea of the bags and etc.

The following activity can act as a Webquest for studying author, Gary Paulsen. There are directions on the worksheet on how to get to the website where students can study the life and times of Gary Paulsen. Students will also examine some excerpts of his books, investigate his style, and analyze notable quotes from his books. Last but not least, students can also take a quiz on the site to determine how much they comprehended about author, Gary Paulsen.

Autobiography Project Students will be able to: Reflect on themselves in the future. Examine and express their emotions, interests, and etc. in written and/or oral form. Present their information orally to peers (Choice of Course) Predict their future goals.

The following project can be used as a summative assessment for any novel that was read in a group setting or read independently. I have used this project countless times and wanted to share, so that your students can be creative and seek enjoyment in creating a project for their novels that they read. Not only will your students enjoy creating this project, but you will also enjoy grading them as well- they are usually quite entertaining.

Objective: Students will practice the skill of recall, citing evidence, and using point of view by creating a speech and a poster for the story. Prior to the project, students must read the story, Ghost of the Lagoon and take notes about the characters, setting, conflict, and plot. Then, prior to the construction of the project, students will need to plan for their project. Standards: RL.6.1, RL.6.3, RL.6.5, RL.6.6
