This is a review of what I thought were the most essential concepts and skills my second grade friends need to have mastered before the school year ends. These can be used as activities, assessments, etc.
This file includes:
MATH
- place value to the thousands
- regrouping: addition
- regrouping: subtractions
- arrays
- fractions
- measurement
ELA
- comprehension
- main idea & details
- sequencing
- summarizing
- writing
plus the following Social Studies activities
- me & the world
- citizenship
So, if your kids are two-digit subtraction champions :) BUT are a little stumped when it comes to regrouping to the hundreds place, then this is the activity for you.
This activity can be used as an I-Spy game or simply as a group/partner/independent activity to help your kids practice subtracting with regrouping.
Enjoy!
These are the Common Core Math Learning Targets for second grade. These are 8.5x11 posters you can laminate and place on your board/wall or under your doc cam so your kids can easily see what the objective of their learning is for each subject.
I dont know if this has happened to you but when I teach two-digit addition my kids usually get really good at adding with or without regrouping separately. When I give them a little bit of both together in one activity though, it's like I never taught it and they never learned it :/. On that note, I decided that they needed more exposure to mixed two-digit addition equations with/without regrouping and made this activity.
This file includes:
directions
equation cards
recording sheet
sorting she
I created this activity and these worksheets to help my kids learn and become fluent in breaking down a word problem and finding out: What is being asked? What operation will need to be used to solve it? What words/phrases help to figure out the operation needed to solve it?
I think this will also help them prepare for and understand the "wording" used in many standardized tests :).
This 50 page ZIP file includes:
Mixed Word Problems Activity - There are 28 cards which you can print out alone,
So, one of the first concepts taught/reviewed in second grade math are odd and even numbers. I like to help them understand that even numbers always have a partner; where as with odd numbers, there's always one without a partner.
This file includes:
Even Numbers poster
Odd Numbers poster
Directions on how to make the I-Spy cards (with pictures :)

Enjoy!
This activity has three posters that teach three different ways to understand an array: repeated addition of items in rows, repeated addition of items in columns, and multiplying number of columns and rows.
This file includes:
* Three posters (color & b/w)
* 24 array cards (color & b/w)
* Recording sheets (color & b/w)
Enjoy!
So I figured since my kids need to work on this same concept in addition, I should get ahead of the game here and prepare an activity with two digit subtraction equations with/without regrouping.
The file includes:
directions
monster card set
recording sheet
sorting mat/sheet
(all of these are in color and b/w)
Enjoy :)
This activity allows your kids to create their very own story problems. They also show how to solve the problem and the answer on the back (in answer sheet). The story problems can be collected and made into a class book. Students will be able to read each other's story problems and try and solve them. They can check their work afterwards by looking at the answer sheet on the back.
These posters are great to place in your classroom to help your kids remember the steps to solving a word or story problem.
This file includes the following steps:
Read
Plan
Solve
Check
There are questions or reminders on each poster.
I was thinking of a fun way to drill a basic concept into the minds of my lovely children and this is what I came up with.
This file includes:
"What's My Number?" cards A-Z (up to the hundreds cards set & up to the tens card set)
"What's My Number?" recording sheet
Place Value Bag Labels
Place Value Number Cards
Place Value Mat
Place Value recording Sheet
(FIle includes printer friendly b&w :)
ENJOY!
We noticed some of our kids were still struggling with adding money. So I made this engaging activity that I used as a morning warm up but you can also use it as a a center or activity.
All you need are baggies of coins for partners :).
Enjoy!
Students draw 4 one-digt cards and create two-two digit numbers. They then create a subtraction equation and solve it.
There's room for 4 equations. This is a great morning warm up or a fun activity for students to review their subtraction skills.
Directions are also on the sheet :).
