Flinking Lab-Engineering Design Process

This Flinking lab is a simple, engaging way to walk students through the steps of the engineering design process. One of the challenges I find teaching the engineering design process is having enough class time for students to change and re-test a design multiple times. This lab allows for the opportunity to quickly design a prototype, test it out, and then and to quickly re-design many times for improvement. I've found any age level enjoys this lab and the frustration of trying to make somethin

Engineering Design Activity-Limited Supplies Egg Drop

This is a 2-3 day egg drop activity. It has been planned to be completed in a small group, but it can be done individually. There are 3 pages to this activity. The first is a general overview and rubric of the egg drop assignment. The 2nd and 3rd page is a worksheet that has students go through a quick, general overview of the 3 major phases of the engineering design process as they complete the activity: Define and Delimit, Design, and Optimize Solutions. This assignment is one where the teache

Engineering Design Activity: Egg Drop on a Budget

This activity takes the egg drop to the next level! This activity guides students through the entire engineering design process in detail. This assignment was designed as a 6 day group activity with 2-3 students per group. Each day has a worksheet for each student in the group to complete that is different for each group member and is focused around the task for the day. This allows everyone with a job to do each day! Every group will have the opportunity to first design and build a model device

Flinking Lab Focus-Engineering Design Process Activity

This Flinking lab is a simple, engaging way to walk students through the steps of the engineering design process. This is a shorter, more concise version of my other Flinking lab posted. I use this lab for my special education high school biology class. I believe a general education middle school science class would also be able to complete this assignment. One of the challenges I find teaching the engineering design process is having enough class time for students to change and re-test a design

Experience

Teaching style

While my lessons may not always look fancy, they will get the job done. As a teacher, I try to have my students "do" science as much as possible. I also try to accommodate as many different learning styles as I can. The assignments and worksheets may not always look pretty, but they will help guide students in their production of high quality work, apply content using a variety of learning styles, get students moving and investigating science concepts, and promote discussion, reflection, and critical thinking. I also believe there is nothing wrong with good book work from time to time, so I have provided these types of assignments as well.

Additional biographical information

Please note that at the moment, I am slowly building my store. I may not have to this date all of the types of lessons I will be promising in my teaching style described above. When I'm not teaching, I enjoy the outdoors and outdoor activities. I also travel a lot during the summer. Many of my trips revolve around observing science related phenomenon such as extreme tidal bulges, the northern lights, and glaciers.
