Activity to build a paper model of DNA. Includes a pre-activity reading, directions to make the model, follow-up questions, and the pieces of the model. Guiding question for assignment: What are the parts of DNA's structure?
A one-day lab for high school chemistry or physical science courses that runs students through the process of electroplating a penny with zinc. Set-up: Teacher should prepare a zinc sulfate (ZnSO4) or zinc chloride (ZnCl2) solution for the students to use. Zinc chloride can be made by adding zinc to hydrochloric acid and waiting until the mixture stops bubbling (NOTE: This should be done in a fume hood as hydrogen gas is produced.)
This is an excellent assignment for when you need last-minute sub plans! Students choose a (near) grade-level reading based on actual scientific papers, answer content questions, and identify the paper's claim, evidence, and reasoning.
