I teach both AP and on-level English, which means I'm constantly working with texts I haven't taught in years (or ever). Early in my career, I'd panic-read novels at midnight and cobble together random lesson plans.
Then I realized something: The texts can change every year. The standards don't.
My students don't succeed because I'm an expert on every book. They succeed because I teach them transferable skills that work across ANY text.
