This is the first project I have my students do using a camera. I have them color a "Flat Stanley" to use as their subject. Then they use their Stan to demonstrate Asymmetry, Rule of Thirds, Framing, and Contrast. It's a lot of fun and a good way to get them thinking about composition before moving onto tougher projects.
This lesson teaches students about 2 elements of photography- Lines and Shapes. The lesson is about how simple lines and shapes can express different emotions, emphasize specific parts of a photograph, and help frame a photo.
This Google Doc has links to sites that explain how a camera works like the human eye. Great way to teach the parts of a camera and how it all works together.
Before I do any photo editing I have the students do this exercise to teach them how pixels work. It's a fun "unplugged" lesson that really helps then understand digital photography.

This is the first lesson of my photography class. Before I ever let the kids touch a camera I want them to understand why we take photos and when it is appropriate to edit photos.
