Description
This is a fun activity that gets students to write ancient Anglo-Saxon runes from the "Dark Ages" of England. Students are asked to create an Anglo-Saxon pendant that a warrior from the epic Beowulf, a Viking, or a Celt might have worn as a brooch. I teach this as a fun activity as kids are reading the Old English epic Beowulf. The materials needed are quite minimal and kids generally enjoy it. This handout contains all of the instructions needed including the necessary alphabet and graphic example.

Great activity. Excellent addition to my Vikings unit.
My year 8's loved this!! They enjoyed making the pendants and we have used the alphabet for other activities
My students loved this activity! Thank you for the resource.
This was so creative and fun. I used it with my seniors and although they rolled their eyes at the idea of it in the beginning, they all ended up enjoying it.
Used this activity to supplement my Beowulf unit. Since I am in Minnesota, I showed the education video on YouTube about the Kensington Runestone found buried in a farm field in central Minnesota during the late 1880s. Also, I showed some images of Celtic tattoos, and students were even more engaged. At any rate, I had high school juniors and seniors planning and drawings for about 30-minutes straight!
My students enjoyed this resource when introducing to Anglo-Saxon period.
Thanks!
Great Resource! Very nice!! Thanks
