This math exploration focuses on Factors and Prime Factorization.
The higher level thinking of this exploration focuses on using prime factorization to manipulate prime factors to come up with all of the factors of a given number. Through group discussion and independent perseverance, students develop strategies for finding all factors of a number, recognize connections between the factors in a number, and develop the ability to communicate their strategies and findings.
This download contains 10 teacher pgs of questions and scaffolding to display on the smartboard or print off to guide your lessons, 20 1/2 sheets for student math journals, (or for making a booklet), 3 assessment pgs where students consider whether or not a number is a multiple of 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, or 9, and 9 pgs of information and common core alignment for the teacher. The product contains the question set for the exploration, then future questions/student sheets can be used for math stations/rotations, warm-ups, partner discussions, etc. Later sheets can be used as informal assessments of students' grasp on the concepts or for spiral review later in the year.

4.OA.B4 Find all factor pairs for a whole number in the range 1-100. Recognize that a whole number is a multiple of each of its factors. Determine whether a given whole number in the range 1-100 is a multiple of a given 1-digit number. Determine whether a given whole number is prime or composite.
