This unit covers the math common core standards 1.OA.1 and 1.OA.2 for problem solving. There are 18 letters from favorite storybook characters, enough for the first half of the year! Mail one letter a week to your classroom after you have read the story so they are familiar with the character! Solve the first few together as a whole group then allow students to solve on their own or with a partner! This can be done in math journals, on whiteboards, wherever! I have my students solve it with manipulatives then draw a picture sentence and write the number sentence! This is a FUN way to transition to math time! Students LOVE receiving mail! They anticipate who will write to them next and what that character's problem might be! *Check back for the second half of the year!
