This activity is designed to get students thinking about including more description in writing, from personal narratives to short stories. The activity forces students to include a description in every third sentence while also dealing with dialogue and action. The students will follow a pattern: the first sentence must be either action or dialogue; the next sentence must be action, dialogue, or description; and the next sentence must be description. The pattern then repeats. Examples of each type of sentence are provided as well as a sample beginning.

I spent the first three years of my career teaching language arts to seventh graders. Since then (for the past eight years) I have mainly been teaching Freshman English and AP English.
