FRANKENSTEIN & "Rime of the Ancient Mariner" Chart

Created by

This chart lists 15 major similarities between FRANKENSTEIN and "Rime of the Ancient Mariner." The chart is an excellent springboard for class discussion on the two literary works. Mary Shelley actually heard Coleridge recite "Rime of the Ancient Mariner" in her home as a child. The haunting poem never left her, and there are many allusions to Coleridge's poem in her novel. This would be a great group activity by requiring small groups to examine 2 or 3 of the similarities and presenting an

Seniors love this! I use this project for the last six weeks of the school year to help ward off senioritis. Students study various poets, watch a clip from DEAD POETS' SOCIETY for the "carpe diem" poem, listen to Loreena McKennitt's "The Lady of Shalott" as they study Tennyson, and watch the Simpsons' "Nightmare Cafeteria" to delve into satire and write their own satirical poem. These are just a few of the assignments included in the poetry project. I am amazed at the poems the students wri

About the store

Experience

I have 25 years experience - 14 in the classroom and 11 as a coordinator. I currently serve as a curriculum specialist. I taught 9th, 10th and 12th with 10 years AP Literature experience. Prior to education I worked 10 years for the government.

Teaching style

I still have a passion for the classroom and hope to help other teachers. I love an active, risk-taking classroom! I also enjoy creating the atmosphere where students feel free to take a risk--from acting Shakespearean parts to singing a funeral dirge for Frankenstein's creature--even dancing to Kate Bush's song "Wuthering Heights." Yes, we must tackle AP prompts and AP multiple-choice excercises and MLA formal essays--but we also fill the room with energy!

Awards & shining teacher moments

I was blessed to be named the Marva Collins Teacher of the Year for the Aledo ISD in May 2009. I received $10,000 as a grant. I have also been named most influential teacher by some of the top ten percent graduating seniors. These are tangible accolades, but the "honors" that mean the most are those students who return to thank you for your help.

My own education history

--Texas Christian University - BS in Education - Summa Cum Laude --University of North Texas - MA with focus in British Literature

Additional biographical information

I am an Anglophile at heart having visited England three times. Visiting the Bronte parsonage in Haworth (northern England) has been one of the most wonderful events in my life. To see Emily's moors brought tears to my eyes. I live in a log home west of Fort Worth with my husband of 36 years. My daughter and her husband live in Los Angeles, and she has a master's degree in Art History from the University of London.
