Description

The Life Science Interactive Notebook: Cell Structure and Function chapter showcase student’s ability to:

  • State the cell theory
  • Distinguish characteristics of prokaryotic cells and eukaryotic cells
  • Describe the functions of the major cell structures
  • Identify structures and explain the main functions of the cell membrane and cell wall
  • Recognize scientists’ contributions to the discovery of the cell
  • Understand effects of osmosis on cells in hypertonic solution, hypertonic solution, and isotonic solution

Each activity enables students to process the information given by the teacher then allows them to use self-direction to apply their new knowledge. The engaging activities always vary in order for all students to use and benefit from different learning styles. Activities included correlating with the Next Generation Science Standards.

Cell Structure and Function includes the following chapters:

  • The Discovery of Cells
  • The Plasma Membrane
  • Eukaryotic Cell Structure
  • Prokaryotic Cell Structure
  • Cellular Transport

Activities include:

  • Cell History Timeline (Hooke, Redi, Schwann, Leeuvenhoek, Watson, Schleiden, Schwann, Morgan, Jansen)
  • Plasma Membrane Bubble activity that shows flexible membrane, semi-permeable membrane, embedded proteins, selective permeability, structure of plasma membrane, fluid mosaic model
  • Eukaryotic cell structure (animal and plant cell) school analogy of mitochondria, vacuole, nucleus, endoplasmic reticulum, ribosome, golgi apparatus, cytoskeleton, lysosome, plasma membrane
  • Prokaryotic cell structure (bacteria) - making a "Wanted Poster"
  • Effects of osmosis on cells in hypertonic solution, hypotonic solution, isotonic solution picture sort

Each concept shares:

  • Actual photos of both the INPUT and OUTPUT pages of Science Interactive Notebook
  • Instructions on how to create/use/complete activity for OUTPUT side
  • Mini-Quizzes for each concept to check students’ understanding
  • Answer Keys for all mini-quizzes
  • Appendix with Teacher Notes for Interactive Notebook in LARGE print.
