Linear Functions:  Practicing Point Slope Form using Roller Coasters

Description

This is a 2 part activity that can be used after you have taught students how to write equations in point slope form as well as how to convert this form to slope intercept or standard form. In the first activity students are given the points to create a roller coaster. Students must then find the linear equations of the loading platform, the climbs, the drops, the death drops, and the unloading platform. This can be done as a guided instruction with the students or given to the students to complete independently. The follow up activity is a major project I give my students in the linear functions unit of my Algebra I course. Students are then required to create and design their own roller coaster from scratch and then complete the recording template. The project can be done on regular graph paper, but I place students into groups of 2-3 and give each group 2 large grided poster papers (purchased for me by my school) which they paste together to make one large and brilliant roller coaster. I have used this activity with my7th and 8th grade Algebra I students for years now and they love these assignments.
