"Connotation Creation"- a game to teach Connotation vs. Denotation
This is "Connotation Creation"- a game I made up which teaches the difference between connotations and denotations. I tell students at the beginning of the hour that by the end of the game, they will all know the difference between the two terms and be able to explain each. The kids love it and get very competitive. Interview Scenarios Game: Dos and Don'ts
This is a review game I use with high school students after learning about proper interview etiquette. Students work in teams of 2-3 and read seven different interview scenarios, trying to evaluate what the interviewee did right and wrong. This game involves higher-level thinking and requires students to support their opinions with reasoning and evidence, which ties directly in with the Common Core State Standards. They always enjoy it, and the winning team gets candy. :)

Thesis Statement Help! Graphic Organizer, Worksheet, Sample Essay
This graphic organizer is a great "thesis statement builder"-it's a great way to teach the process of how to create a thesis statement. Also, there is a sample literary analysis essay to show students how a thesis begins in the intro and is carried out throughout the paper.

AP Lang Q3 Prep: Specificity in Examples
I designed this activity to help my AP Language students increase the specificity in the examples they come up with when answering the Open-Ended Q3 Argument prompt. This activity could be used outside of test preparation to teach students how to enhance the specificity of examples they use in support of an argumentative thesis. Demonstration Speech Assignment
This product includes the description of a demonstration speech assignment and a rubric with which to score the speech. I use it in my Senior Speech unit, but it could easily be adapted for junior high through any level of high school or college.
The rubric details various qualities of a good demonstration speech, including but not limited to organization, content, preparedness, speaking skills, etc. It also provides a brief explanation of what these include to show students what to shoot for.

Essay Writing using Claim, Evidence, and Reasoning.
This is a great activity I use to familiarize students with the following terms: claim, evidence, reasoning, thesis statement, transitions, clincher, hook, etc.

Argument Skills- Identifying Claim, Evidence, and Commentary
TIES IN WITH COMMON CORE STANDARDS- SUPPORTING CLAIMS WITH EVIDENCE AND REASONING. This is a worksheet to help students practice identifying claim, evidence, and commentary in persuasive writing and advertisements. I define each of the terms and provide a sample adverstising pitch in which they need to identify them. I do this as practice before assigning the end-of-unit Argumentative Paper, which I also have for sale on TPT.

This is a handout I give my seniors for an Argumentative Paper. I explain what claim, evidence, and commentary are on this handout and tie them to their paper. This is a research-based argumentative essay, and it can be paired with my other document for sale on TPT (worksheet for identifying claim, commentary, and evidence). Even though I use it with seniors, the concepts and the paper can be adapted for grades 8-12.

This is a worksheet I give my students to work on as they watch Slumdog Millionaire. It approaches the movie as a "living text"- there are 4 critical thinking prompts they are to answer as they watch the movie. Rhetorical Analysis Analysis Game
This activity was used with my 12th grade AP Language students to practice rhetorical analysis. Included is a news article and a thorough analysis of its strategies, why they were used, how they impacted the audience, and how these strategies achieved the overall purpose.

Rubric for writing a fantastic paragraph
This is a rubric I use when teaching how to write a fantastic paragraph. In short, it details the ingredients in a well-structured paragraph--claim, evidence/reasons, explanation of evidence, and clincher. These labels all correspond with Common Core language and the descriptions for each category were inspired by the common core standards. This is a presentation I give my kids when reviewing subject-verb agreement. In it, I cover single subjects and their verbs, compound subjects- when joined by "and" and "or/nor", and plural subjects. This works well as a mini lesson when followed up by a worksheet to assess their understanding.

Experience
I am a high school English teacher; I teach the AP English at the junior level, an English enrichment class to freshmen, and Research Writing to seniors.
I also have experience teaching 8th grade and sophomore level English.
Teaching style
I encourage hands-on activities and do a lot of think-pair-share type lessons. I try to structure lessons beginning with basic, plot-based questions, then I move towards more critical-thinking activities.
I am very passionate about the Common Core, and many of my lessons include CCSS language, close reading and annotating of texts, and pairing non-fiction supplemental pieces with literature.
I also have a passion for language and grammar, and I believe making it as interesting and funny as possible for kids will help them retain the language conventions; many of my grammar presentations have silly examples and images, as a result. :)
My own education history
I have a bachelor's degree in English Education from Purdue University as well as a master's in Teacher Leadership from Aurora University.
