Description
Grow mealworms in the classroom! A fun project for students studying insects and metamorphosis.
There are three projects in this product, with an optional fourth, that involve the mealworms, and I'm sure you and your students will come up with some more experiments. You may even want to have the students experiment with the adult beetles.
Each experiment, following the scientific method, gets progressively more independent. The third experiment has the students writing their own procedure and creating their own data chart. If you decide to do a fourth experiment, have the students create everything themselves, but with your approval. I have included a guide sheet for this, but you may want to use your own.
Included in this product:
-Power point presentation - to familiarize them with mealworms and metamorphosis
-Project Activity Sheets with instructions for all of the experiments and observations
-Activity worksheet to fill-in - for review or homework
-Vocabulary sheet to fill-in - for review or homework
-Labeled diagrams - for reference
-Observation Data Chart - for daily, or almost daily, measurements and observations
Students create a booklet containing all of their data they collect over the time the project proceeds, which may be as long as 6-8 weeks, but requires only 10-20 minutes per week once the initial experiments are over with.

My students loved having mealworms in the classroom and we used the booklets as a guide to studying them. An select group of students went on to do further independent research with the mealworms using the booklet as a starting place.
This resource is a good way to show the students of the metamorphosis of a mealworm. I used it as bulletin board in the class to show the different stages and about how long each stage lasts. Very useful.
My student thoroughly enjoyed this lab
Loved the project. Wish there was a quick answer guide included for the fill in the blanks.
