Description

These twelve self-checking riddles are a great resource for classwork, centers, or homework. My kids love doing riddles like these (though I think what they love even more is telling me how corny the jokes are). I, of course, love being able to quickly grade an entire stack of papers!

These activity sheets focus on addition and subtraction and allow students to evaluate expressions for the reasonableness of their sums and differences and to calculate sums & differences of multi-digit numbers.

The format of these riddle sheets allow you to separate the problems from the fill-in-the-blank joke so that students can't work backwards and figure out the joke and plug in the correct answers without doing any mathematics.

Common Core State Standard for Mathematics focus:

Assess the reasonableness of answers using mental computation and estimation strategies including rounding. (4.OA.3)

Fluently add and subtract multi-digit whole numbers using the standard algorithm.

(4.NBT.4)

This was an engaging way for students to think about reasonableness. That is always a skill that we are working on, and is difficult to find resources for. thank you!
