Experience

Teaching style

Lora incorporates constructivism and brain-based teaching and learning pedagogy. She emphasizes problem-based and cooperative learning strategies. Action research and authentic assessment constitute key elements in everyday reflection and iterative review of methods and materials.

Awards & shining teacher moments

Actually, my most valued teaching moment came when I realized the key to teaching elementary students with dyslexia to read was to provide them with Dr. Seuss books. I was able to take a fourth grade student from non-reader status to the fourth grade reading level on classroom reading tests in the span of only one year with this method. Jon went on to successfully graduate from high school after years of fully integrated classes, with the aid of books on tape, available free to the dyslexic as well as the blind.

My own education history

Lora has earned a bachelor of arts degree in elementary and music education from Marycrest College, Davenport, Iowa; a master of science degree in special education from Western Illinois University, Macomb, and a master of arts degree in instructional design and technology from The University of Iowa, Iowa City, Iowa.
